All about ALS and BLS Courses - CPS

ALS (Advanced Life Support) and BLS (Basic Life Support) are courses that teach individuals how to respond to emergency medical situations.

Basic Life Support (BLS)

BLS is focused on providing basic life support to individuals in cardiac arrest and other emergencies. The course covers basic medical procedures and protocols, such as CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation), the use of an AED (automated external defibrillator) and relieving choking.

BLS teaches practitioners to safely assess the scenario and read a victim’s vitals. Furthermore, participants learn how to determine which treatment is best and how to perform each treatment until more advanced care becomes available or more experienced responders arrive on the scene.

BLS is typically taught to the common public , such as family members of patients or those in certain professions (like teachers or lifeguards) who may be the first to respond in an emergency. It is usually the first step before receiving ALS training.

Advanced Life Support (ALS)

ALS is a more advanced course that is intended for healthcare professionals, such as doctors , paramedics and nurses. The course covers advanced medical procedures and protocols, including the use of advanced equipment and medications. It is typically a longer course that covers a wider range of topics than BLS. Some of the key topics covered in an ALS course include:

• Advanced airway management techniques

• Cardiac arrest management

• Trauma care

• Pharmacology and medication administration

• ECG interpretation

• Resuscitation

Advanced Life Support courses are designed for professional healthcare providers who participate in the assessment and management of critical patients, including those working in hospital, pre-hospital, and out-of-hospital medical facilities like first aid centers on highways, in companies, during sports etc.

One of the main differences between Advanced Life Support and Basic Life Support is that the latter is non-invasive. This means that a BLS cannot use needles and other devices that make cuts in the skin. BLS providers are also not permitted to administer medications. An ALS provider, on the other hand, can give injections and even administer medication to a patient. In short, in the event of cuts or injuries, an ALS can provide basic care while a BLS person is not authorized to. Institutions such as the College of Physicians and Surgeons (CPS) Mumbai, offer training in Pediatric ALS and BLS courses and grant certificates after completion of the course. These CPS courses are intended to teach people how to recognise and respond to a wide range of Pediatric medical emergencies, as well as provide life-saving intervention until professional medical assistance arrives. Furthermore, these courses are updated on a regular basis to reflect the most recent medical guidelines and research. It is recommended that you take these courses on a regular basis to refresh your knowledge and skills.

In conclusion, ALS and BLS training is required for anyone who intends to be prepared in case of a medical emergency. These courses provide individuals with the knowledge and required skills to save lives in life-threatening situations. Certifications in this course gives an individual better job opportunities . Taking an ALS or BLS course, whether you are a healthcare professional or a regular person, can give you the confidence and ability to make a difference in someone's life when it matters the most.
