BAPIO and CPS Mumbai Join Hands to Boost Healthcare Capacity in India

The British Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (BAPIO) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the 'College of Physicians and Surgeons of Mumbai'.

BAPIO is a voluntary and charitable organisation established in 1997 to support doctors of Indian origin working in the UK. The organisation aims to address policy issues, provide support, and facilitate training opportunities for its members.

The signing of the (MoU) between BAPIO and the CPS Mumbai marks a significant milestone in the efforts to strengthen ties between India and the UK in the healthcare sector. The agreement aims to build capability and capacity in the Indian health workforce, paving the way for future collaborations and partnerships between the two countries. With the presence of Deputy Head of Mission, Catherine Barnes, the signing of the MoU is a testament to the commitment of both organisations towards improving healthcare outcomes and providing better opportunities for doctors of Indian origin. It is expected that the collaboration will lead to the exchange of knowledge, skills, and best practices, ultimately benefiting patients in both countries.

The organisation's leadership team includes Mrs Catherine Barnes(Deputy Head of Mission and British Deputy High Commission – Mumbai), Dr Mrs Geeta Menon, Dr Ramesh Mehta, Prof Parag Singhal, Dr BipinBatra, and Dr Raju Khandelwal.

The BAPIO Training Academy (BTA) is an academic arm of the organisation, offering a range of training programmes, including nursing. The BTA is designed to train doctors of Indian origin after they have completed their postgraduate studies. BAPIO also has a research forum that focuses on medical research. The organisation aims to connect with governments in both the UK and India to facilitate training and address policy issues.

The BTA's flagship programmes include the International Fellowship Programme (IFP) and the Two plus Two programme. To enrol in these programmes, candidates must be registered with their local medical council and complete the training prescribed by the CPS. Candidates must also follow the BTA academic calendar, clear the English examination OET/IELTS, and pass the CPS examination after two years to be eligible for further training in the UK.

The IFP is open to candidates who have completed a recognised three-year FCPS course. The Two plus Two programme is offered in collaboration with the University of South Wales and requires six months of training in MBA from an institution in the UK. The programme aims to provide CPS candidates with an opportunity to acquire qualifications like MRCP, MRCPCH, MRCOG, and more.

BAPIO aims to support doctors of Indian origin working in the UK through a range of training and support programmes. With its focus on academic excellence and research, the organisation plays an essential role in the medical community.
