CPS: The Legacy in Medical Education

The College of Physicians and Surgeons (CPS) of Mumbai, founded in 1912 by Surgeon Gen. Sir H. W. Stevenson and the Government, has left an indelible mark on India's medical education history. Established in the likeness of the Royal College of London, CPS emerged with a mission: to augment the number of specialists in India's medical domain. It got its first recognition under 1933 IMC act , then continued in 1956 IMC act. It proudly stands as one of the pioneering institutions to offer postgraduate training in the country. With its rich legacy, practical approach, and faculty of distinguished professionals, CPS has molded countless students into accomplished healthcare experts.
Historical Overview
From its inception in the early 20th century, CPS not only aimed to elevate the standard of medical education in India but also envisioned a landscape where specialized doctors were no longer a rarity. With the guidance of luminaries in the field of medicine, the institution has played a seminal role in advancing medical knowledge and practice in India.
Milestones in the Journey of CPS
CPS has illuminated the paths of over 45,000 postgraduate doctors, standing as a beacon of excellence in the medical community. A testament to its legacy is its enduring presence in the Medical acts of states like West Bengal and Punjab. Until the late sixties or early seventies, CPS Fellows were recognized in the National Medical Register of the UK. Today, CPS is affiliated with prominent institutions like the Royal College for MRCP and Anaesthesia and has strategic partnerships with the BAPIO Training Academy. Innovations like the state-of-the-art Simulation Lab further solidify its commitment to hands-on training and excellence.
Courses Offered by CPS Across Indian States
CPS's network spreads across various states in India. Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Dadra & Nagar Haveli, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka, Tripura, and Meghalaya collectively present an expansive array of courses. These range from foundational programs, like the Membership and Fellowship courses, to an extensive list of Diplomas in specialized fields.
